Creating Goals that
Rock Your Socks!

Last Sunday I walked. And walked. And walked. 13.1 miles to be precise. Past Jimmy Fund posters of Missy who's 5 and loves cheese pizza, Allison who's 7 and loves to ride her bike, Henry who's 2 and sings his heart out.

I walked because I could. I walked because my friend Jim's baby brother Ben just celebrated 20 years cancer-free because The Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute saved his life and his family's sanity. I walked because my dear friend Melody is 11 years cancer-free and because this fierce disease killed my Aunt Marjorie and left my 3 cousins under 6, mother-less.

Perhaps you know what it's like to walk on a sunny Sunday in Boston with 6700 people who connected with their networks and together raised $5 million dollars. Yes, $5M for 1 gorgeous day of walking to make a dramatic difference in the lives of children with cancer. This was my first experience.

I was blown away by the collective power of creating a goal that rocked my socks!

First, though, let me be honest and confess that I got major personal and UNEXPECTED benefits---p-l-e-a-s-u-r-e, not PAIN---from working on this goal. (and that's what kept this "milktoast un-athlete" disciplined during 12 weeks of training and over 134 miles racked up on those orange sneakers you see above.)

Bonus Ways My
"Rockin" Goal Paid Off

1) Savored 30 delicious "Walk & Talk" training hours with my best friend and marathon partner, Sarah, hashing out our lives and dumping out our stress on the bikepath.

2) Mellowed out by spending 30 glorious summer training hours (except 1 horrible hour on the treadmill at the gym) walking amongst the peace and magnificence of nature--quiet marshes, glistening waters, singing yellow finches.

3) Getting disciplined and energized spurred me to tackle some dreaded projects with terrific results--tracking my finances with zeal, pitching out piles of "stuff", cooking up a storm. (Yes, this really did happen--ask Derek!)

How to Create a Goal that
Rocks YOUR Socks!

1. What Secret Desire do you have? What Agonizing Dilemma is keeping you awake at night? Answer both questions, quickly and honestly, without editing. (No one is going to read this except you, so be radically honest and open with yourself.)

2. Imagine what would make achieving this Secret Desire or resolving this Agonizing Dilemma SO critical that it became the #1 priority of your life? (i.e. serious health scare, news of your spouse's affair, foreclosure on your home, you feel suicidal, your child won't talk to you for days, )

3. Act as if you're doing Disaster Training and list 3 small action steps you would take immediately for this "triage" situation.

4. Now sit quietly and reflect on what you've just written. Or take a walk and let it percolate through you. Notice what happens next, how you're feeling, what's bubbling up inside you.

5. Do you feel a certain resolve and impulse to claim it, some part of this Secret Desire or Agonizing Dilemma as a Goal that Rocks YOUR Socks? If so, write it out using positive wording and present tense in a short statement.

Here are 2 Rockin' Goals I'm passionately working-and playing-with right now:

Rockin' Goal #1: Derek and I celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary houseboating on Lake Powell in September 2007, all expenses paid.

Rockin' Goal #2: I work with 20 affluent, respectful, "life has meaning" families, as
My Getaway Nanny, by September 2007.
