Aha! Moments

By Morgaine Beck

Have you ever noticed how sometimes a "lightbulb" goes off in your head or you get a flash of insight and you suddenly just get it?

You know—as if you've just remembered something you've always known?

That's what we call Aha! moments and they are key to connecting with our intuition. Aha! moments can show up as a sudden release of tension, a deep sense of calm, a surge of positive energy, a creative jolt, or a powerful feeling that you know what you've got to do.

On November 2, 1999, I had a life-defining Aha! moment. Yeah, I remember the date. It was that kind of moment.

I was at the office of Kate P. for my monthly massage. I had just sat down for Kate's wonderful pre-massage process where we sit and talk about what I'm up to and up against. Up against? I was in that really stuck place where everything seemed hopeless and impossible. Do you know that feeling?

I was searching for right livelihood and up to that point, every option I could think up felt heavy and effortful. One of my friends had suggested I think of things I love to do and even that felt like work. I wasn't inspired to do anything. I was stuck in negative thinking and my gremlins (those self-sabotaging voices inside) were having a field day!

So, I was sitting with Kate and sharing about all this. How I want to work with people one-on-one. How I don't want to be a therapist. How I don't' want to move off Cape Cod, yet what kind of fulfilling job can I get here? Blah, blah, blah.

Kate listened to me in her compassionate and intent way. (Those of you who know Kate know what I mean. She's Kuan Yin with a sword.) Calmly she asked, "Have you thought about life coaching?"

At that moment, a bright light burst open inside me. All of the sudden, a rush of knowing flooded my body. I felt mentally excited, enormously relieved and a powerful sense that I knew what I needed to do. This Aha! moment set me on fire!
